Job Description

Title: Housing Specialist

About the Organization:
Greenhope Services for Women, Inc. was established in 1975 in a convent that was transformed into a comprehensive residential treatment program for formerly incarcerated women. Over the years, it has developed formal relationships with the criminal justice system and has expanded its work to include services for women on parole and those referred by the courts as an alternative to incarceration (ATI).

Located in East Harlem, Greenhope's commitment to providing quality services to predominantly poor African American and Latina ex-offenders has made it a leader in working with women to address the problems that lead to a life of drugs and crime. It is one of the few woman-centered facilities operating in New York State, which serves both parolees and ATI clients.

Department: Ambulatory Services

Summary: Assists clients in obtaining housing and related entitlements/benefits, while ensuring program compliance.

Reports to: Director of Ambulatory Services

Requirements:

The successful candidate will possess a Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 2 years demonstrated work experience in the area of Housing and/or Independent living services. Candidate must be proficient in Microsoft Word, must have strong communication skills written and verbal, ability to interface with various social service agencies and ability to work effectively with people from diverse economic, cultural and/or ethnic backgrounds who may be in crisis. Candidate must have working knowledge of NYC housing requirements, section 8 qualifications, housing application process, and Federal rental assistance programs and their leasing functions. Knowledge of working with women, substance abuse and the criminal justice population preferred.

Duties

  • Assesses housing needs of client upon referral from various other Greenhope departments and develops housing service plans.
  • Helps clients apply for various housing programs, i.e., HRA-1995; SROs, Section 8, and Follows-up on applications.
  • Develops and maintains housing resources and assists clients in finding permanent, affordable housing.
  • Complete and maintain housing applications and copies of identification information (i.e. birth certificate, non-drivers ID, social security, etc.) to secure entitlements.
  • Educate and assist clients on eligibility for Medicaid, Medicare, public assistance, SSI and other benefits.
  • Coordinate services with other departments and communicate to team about clients' housing progress.
  • Participate in case reviews and case conferences.
  • Maintain documentation of client progress in case records according to all contractual & regulatory standards.
  • Keep abreast of developments of the impact of welfare reform, public assistance, SSI and effects of substance abuse and criminal justice clients via, meetings, conferences, training and literature.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with outside agencies such as housing providers, realtors, HRA and Section 8.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
