New York, NY, August 17, 2009 -- Greenhope Services for Women, Inc., a comprehensive treatment program serving formerly incarcerated women in East Harlem, will sponsor its 12th Annual Community Resource, Education and Career Fair on September 30, 2009 from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at the Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. Harlem State Office Building at 163 West 125th Street, 2nd Floor Art Gallery (between Adam Clayton Powell Blvd. and Lenox Avenue), New York, NY 10035. Each year, Greenhope sponsors this fair to give local organizations a venue to provide information about employment, education and job training programs. It serves as an information marketplace for participants. This FREE event is open to both men and women in all five boroughs.
A few of the employers expected to attend this year’s event include: Verizon, Metropolitan Transit Authority, New York Life Insurance, Time Warner Cable, New York State Troopers, and The New York State Department of Civil Service. Community resource organizations include: The Correctional Association of New York, Non-Traditional Employment for Women, NPower, SUNY/Manhattan Educational Opportunity Center, City University of New York Admission’s Office, and Easter Seals.
This year’s keynote speaker will be Rev. Vivian Nixon, Executive Director, College and Community Fellowship. Rev. Nixon is well known and highly regarded in the reentry community. In 2004, she received the “Lifting As We Climb Advocacy Award” from the Correctional Association of New York. Rev. Nixon serves on the advisory boards of the Prisoner Reentry Institute at John Jay College, the Interfaith Coalition of Advocates for Reentry and Employment (ICARE), and Reentry Net.
Founded in 1975, Greenhope's mission is to empower women involved in substance abuse and the criminal justice system to reclaim their lives and rebuild their communities. Because of Greenhope’s commitment to giving women the necessary keys to maintain sobriety, more than 5,000 women have benefited from the organization’s programs. The annual community resource fair is a showcase of the successful partnerships that Greenhope’s Vocational and Education Department have fostered with service providers throughout the city. Since 1997, thousands of participants have attended and gained information about employment and education opportunities.
